My suggestion: Automate collectiong gold as long as you have space, then use it to advance in the hammer card.
Especially in the early phase of the game collecting gold is more suitable than spending it to the hammer. Or is this already the way it functions? I'm scary to test it... -

however ,people that buys the hammer soon goes full auto, so for the moment I will leave it as rejeted
