As a relatively new player of this game, I'm still working out the strategy and find I run out of time often. It seems overly restrictive to only add 1 minute per turn in the normal speed, given that a turn includes all the steps from worker placement to worker usages. Perhaps increasing the time added to 2 minutes would help without slowing the game down overly much?
